All About Hair...Q: I've noticed as I get older and my hair gets grayer, it also looks thinner. I color my hair to hide the gray, is the hair color causing it and Is there anything I can do about it?
A: Sometimes when you color, it will thin the individual hair shaft, but most often as the grayer, lighter hair starts to show, it creates an illusion of the hair being thinner. Especially if the new growth is silver or white. Hormones can cause hair loss and medication causes your body to be more acidic which in turn causes dehydration and hair loss. If you are truly losing your hair, evidenced by more in the drain, then my advise is to drink plenty of water, the higher the pH the better. Check out the section on All About Water. Q: The crown of my head looks bald but my stylist said I'm not losing my hair. Why does it look this way? A: I believe that as we age and gravity pulls at us, droopy everything if you know what I mean, our scalps also droop. When this happens then the shape of our head causes the crown area to split. Sometimes your stylist can texture mildly on both sides of the split creating little "fences" that when blown toward the split, cause the hair to stand up and not part. At least this works for me. Q: I want to color my hair but every time I get it colored, it gets redder and redder. I want a warm brown but not red. I don't have a lot of gray hair so how can I avoid the reds? I don't want to be ash either. A: You actually have a couple of options. First let me explain why your hair keeps fading to red. When you do permanent color, its a two step process. The developer pulls your color out to make room for the deposit of hair color and when it does this, it opens the hair up, thus damaging the hair shaft. Since the color you're depositing isn't your natural color, it slips out of the shaft over time leaving that red look. Ways to avoid this are to use sulfate free shampoos and conditioners with a pH between 4.5-5.5. Anything higher keeps the hair shaft open. Another option is to start with a color that's milder like Redkin's Color Camo. Yes it's for men but I use it on all my women who want to cover slightly without the fade to red. It only comes in Natural and Ash, light, medium and dark. Guaranteed to not go red or gold and is a color stain and protein. No harsh developer. Q: A: Q: A: |
All About Lashes...Q: What's a reasonable amount of time between refilling my lashes?
A: My average relash is 2 weeks. A few clients go as long as 3-4 weeks but in the long run you end up doing a longer relash appointment to fill what has shed. Same money, not as many visits, big difference between your lash look the longer you go. Q: I had lashes applied that hurt every time I blink. Is this normal? A: No, it is not. My advise is have them removed before they irritate your lid and cause an infection. Q: I want really thick, really long lashes. Can I get that with your lashes? A: Xtreme Lashes are designed to look so natural it's hard to tell if they are your natural lashes or not. I've yet to see two clients with the same amount or length of natural lashes. Since Xtreme Lashes are applied to your own lash, if you have a lot of lashes you get a lot of lashes. If you don't, you won't. I can't apply a lash to non existing lashes. The same rule applies to length. If your lashes are only 5mm long I can't apply a 15mm lash extension. Your lash wouldn't be able to handle the weight and would either fall sideways or would cause your natural lash to shed before its time. Q: Will My real lashes fall out if I get lash extensions? A: The only way your natural lash would fall out is if they were applied improperly or were manually pulled out. With the extensive training Xtreme offers, the application process is bar none, the best. I researched extensively before I chose to join the Xtreme Lash Team. My criteria for lash extensions was training, cleanliness and customer service. Xtreme Lashes passed with flying colors in all those categories and is winning awards for it and their products. Q: Can I wear mascara with lash extensions? A: Yes you can. You won't need too, but if you do you'll need to use Xtreme Volume & Length Mascara or you run the risk of breaking the bond of the adhesive. You can wear another brand but I won't guarantee the wear. Q: Can I get the lashes wet? A: After the first 48 hours you can do just about anything but get too close to heat. Like opening a hot oven door or dishwasher on the dry cycle. The lashes are not real hair but synthetic. But even real lashes have a melting point. Q: A: Q: A: |
All About Nails...Q: I have ridges in my nails and i was wondering what cause it and can anything be done for it?
A: I believe it's always been thought that ridges have something to do with a vitamin deficiency and wouldn't be surprised if dehydration is more the cause. I've noticed it more in older women and since our body become more depleted of needed vitamins and minerals as we age, that makes sense, but I'm also learning that we're in more danger of dehydration. What I do for it is use a mild emory pad to knock off the top of the ridge then use a treatment like Nail Tek for a few weeks or CND Shellac Polish since it's like a natural leveler on uneven nails. Each time we reshellac, I buff the tops with the emory pad until they are smooth and healthy looking. Ridges to me are like wrinkles as they're dead skin cells that have built up and just need to be smoothed out. All dead cells need to be polished off. On the nails, an emory pad. On the face, a glycolic peel or mild scrub. Q: I noticed on your website you only advertise CND Shellac. I've heard of Gelish, Gelac and OPI Iconics. Aren't they the same thing? A: Similar but not the same. I judge how damaging a product is by how easy it is to get off. CND Shellac soaks off in under 10 minutes without scraping the nail surface harshly. The products you mentioned take longer to soak off and more abrasion to get them off the nail. You'd think if they were harder to get off they would last longer but I didn't see any difference and if anything, the nail beds appeared dryer and caused the nails to split. Q: I like my nails short because I'm on a keyboard all day but my friend told me that if my nails are short I shouldn't wear dark polish. Is there a rule of thumb for this? A: It's always personal preference but I think dark looks awesome on short, blunt nails. Obviously from the pictures I've posted in the All About Nails section, my motto is go bold or go home. Maybe your friend needs to step outside her box. Q: A: Q: A: |
